Defense powers No. 1 Thompson to region win over No. 4 Vestavia Hills

Thompson freshman quarterback Trent Seaborn has already accomplished much, but he’s still capable of making mistakes.

Seaborn threw three interceptions, but connected on two touchdown passes and the top-ranked Warriors defense manhandled their way to a 21-3 victory over No. 4 Vestavia Hills on Friday at Warrior Stadium in Alabaster.

Thompson (2-0) allowed 156 total yards of offense, less than 100 yards rushing, and forced two turnovers of its own to keep the Rebels out of the end zone for the first time this season.

Seaborn was picked off by Vestavia Hills’ Jack Mayhall on Thompson’s first drive of the game, but the freshman rebounded with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Colben Landrew on fourth down of the next Warriors possession.

Vestavia Hills responded with a grueling 19-play, 72-yard drive, but came away empty-handed after failing to convert a fourth-and-short opportunity. Despite the wasted possession, Mayhall picked off Seaborn for a second time on the ensuing drive and the Warriors limped into halftime with a 7-0 advantage over the Rebels.

Following two failed Thompson drives, sandwiching a three-and-out, Vestavia Hills (2-1) scored its only points of the game on a 45-yard field goal from Owen Simpson near the end of the third quarter. The Rebels earned its only first down of the second half on the drive and went three-and-out on their final four possessions.

Seaborn was picked off for the third time on the next Thompson drive, but again bounced back with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Landrew with 5:29 remaining in the game.

Thompson quarterback Zach Sims entered the game on the Warriors’ final drive, following an interception, and scored on an 8-yard run to cap the scoring.

Coachspeak: “I promise you this, all wins in the region are good. Rob and them have done such a good job at Vestavia and their kids play hard. A 1-point win is beautiful so I think it’s a beautiful win. Our defense played really well and they did a good job on coverages. We’ll live with that. These region wins are tough and that’s a good football team right there.” — Thompson coach Mark Freeman

“Coach Freeman and his staff do a great job so you have to mix your looks. We did that and our guys made plays on balls down the field. We got to find more explosion in our offense and that’s the way this region is — no easy nights.” — Vestavia Hills coach Robert Evans

They said it: “We’re always going to find a way because we’re Thompson. We’re going to fight through to the end and come out with a victory.” — Oliver

“We stepped up tonight, but Deuce and I could have done better. At the end of the day, we come out with a victory and that’s the important part.” — Landrew

What’s next? Thompson travels to face Spain Park, while Vestavia Hills returns home to host Hoover.
