Defender is Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week

A pair of outstanding defensive performances were recognized in the Week 5 Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week voting, with Corner defensive lineman Austin Reid coming out on top.

Reid had eight tackles in a 21-14 Class 4A, Region 5 win over rival Dora last week – four of them behind the line of scrimmage. The 5-foot-11, 194-pound senior had three sacks in the Yellow Jackets second straight – and fifth in the past six meetings – win over the Bulldogs.

Reid got 31 percent – 7,315 – of the 23,602 votes cast in the poll.

Junior linebacker Marquel Patterson of Ramsay was third in the balloting after registering 17 tackles with three tackles for loss in a 28-15 Class 5A, Region 5 win at Fairfield. Patterson got 4,076 votes.

Parker quarterback Malik Muhammad finished second in the fan vote after running for 180 yards on 10 carries and a score and throwing for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Thundering Herd remained undefeated with a Class 6A, Region 5 win over Gardendale. Muhammad picked up 5,276 votes – 22 percent of the total.

Voting for the Hollis Wright Birmingham Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 5, more than 74,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
