Decatur school system considering third high school

Decatur school officials are inviting the public to take part in an open house this week dealing with creating a third high school.

The meeting will take place Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Career Academies of Decatur, 1229 Westmead St.

Superintendent Michael Douglas will speak on the plan to transform Career Academies into a high school.

“This is a crucial initiative that will shape the future of education in our community, and we want your valuable input and engagement,” a social media post inviting the public states.

According to the system, the school would cater specifically to students interested in exploring workforce and trade options, and would differ from traditional high school, as it would not feature sports, pep rallies or band activities.

According to WAFF, students with Career Academies of Decatur currently split their time between the technical school and Decatur High or Austin High.

If CAD became a high school, there would be no need to leave campus.

“I think it’s about getting kids in the environment they want and meeting the needs of our students,” Douglas said. “It came from a demand of our kids are flourishing at career academy and we sure would like it if they could stay all day.”
