Decatur man fled from hospital, stole vehicle, struck police cruiser, authorities say
Decatur police say a man who left a hospital refusing medical treatment apparently stole a vehicle and struck a police patrol cruiser with it.
Police said officers were called to the area of Decatur Morgan Hospital Saturday in search of a man who had apparently left the hospital, still with medical devices and equipment attached to his body.
Hospital staff were concerned for the man’s welfare, but officers did not locate him immediately.
Ten minutes later, Central Dispatch received a call in reference to a reckless driver who matched the man’s description.
Officers located the man driving recklessly and attempted a vehicle stop. He failed to yield and led multiple officers on a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, the man struck a Decatur police officer’s patrol vehicle.
Police said the man fled on foot from the vehicle before he was taken into custody, arrested for multiple traffic violations and felony attempting to flee and elude.
Several hours later, police said the owner of the vehicle used in the pursuit discovered her vehicle had been stolen.
Shane Lee Lepre was subsequently charged with first degree theft of property and booked into the Morgan County Jail on a $6,900 bond.
