Decatur man charged with assault in shooting, police say

A 27-year-old man is charged with first-degree assault after the Decatur Police Department says he shot another man on Sunday.

According to police, Benjamin Golson Evans said he shot another man after an “altercation.” The Morgan County 911 line received a call about the shooting in the 2100 block of Westmead Drive SW in Decatur, where police officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was then transported to Huntsville Hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries. Evans was booked into the Morgan County Jail at 5:49 pm on a $7,500 bond, per the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office inmate website.

“The defendant is accused of the above crimes and should be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” Irene Cardenas-Martinez, spokesperson for Decatur police, said in a Sunday evening statement.

It’s unclear when the shooting occurred. Cardenas-Martinez did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
