Decatur 19-year-old killed when car runs off road, hits utility pole

Police said a 19-year-old was killed just after 2 a.m. Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Lawrence County.

Alabama State Troopers said Wiliam A. Owens Jr., of Decatur, was fatally injured when his Dodge Challenger he was driving left the roadway, overturned and struck a utility pole.

Troopers said Owens was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:09 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day on Lawrence County Road 222, about three miles east of Trinity.

No additional information was available at publication time. Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
