Death of woman found with bloodied head in driveway of Birmingham home possibly a homicide

An investigation is underway after a woman was found dead outside her east Birmingham home early Tuesday.

A neighbor of the woman’s called 911 shortly after 6 a.m. to report that the woman was down in her driveway with blood coming from her head.

She said she didn’t know if the victim was breathing.

East Precinct officers responded to the scene and found the woman unresponsive in front of her house in the 100 block of Redstone Drive.

Officer De’Rell Freeman said Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced her dead on the scene.

Freeman said the cause of death is not yet known but said foul play is suspected.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of her death.

Detectives were canvassing the neighborhood to see if anybody heard or saw anything suspicious overnight.

The woman’s grieving family gathered outside the yellow police tape waiting for answers. Fire medics were called back to the home to treat a distraught relative.
