An inmate in the Lauderdale County jail died Tuesday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies discovered a male inmate unresponsive in his cell at about 7 p.m. after being alerted by other inmates.

The on-duty nurse responded to the cell and immediately began life-saving measures, but the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the inmate has not yet been released.

According to the sheriff’s office, there were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play.

Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including interviewing other inmates and searching the cell. An autopsy and toxicology report have been ordered.
