Deadly shooting under investigation in Birmingham’s Fountain Heights community

A man was shot to death late Thursday morning in Birmingham’s Fountain Heights community.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were in the area possibly serving an eviction notice when, about 11:20 a.m., they were flagged down and told someone had been shot.  The location was the 1500 block of 18th Street North.

Deputies quickly responded, and notified Birmingham police, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

The victim was found unresponsive on a sidewalk. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

According to police radio communications, the suspect ran away on foot.

No arrests have been made.

Fitzgerald said multiple shots were fired. The deadly shooting happened across the street from Uptown Lofts, and detectives are hoping residents there may have seen something that could help in the investigation.

The victim is Birmingham’s 71st homicide this year. Of those, seven have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 96 homicides including the 71 in Birmingham.
