Deadly shooting in Birmingham’s South East Lake marks city’s 7th homicide in 9 days
A man was gunned down in east Birmingham Saturday night, the city’s second deadly shooting of the day.
Birmingham police about 11:15 p.m. started receiving calls of shots fired of 8200 block of Vassar Avenue. As they were en route, officer received information that someone had been shot.
When East Precinct officers got on the scene, they found the victim dead in the roadway.
Investigators marked roughly a dozen shell cases in the road.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the victim was a male, but they had not determined his age or identity.
“Details are limited in the investigation,’’ he said. “Community members did call in about the shots fired, but little is known about the victim.”
“We are thankful for the community calling in,’’ he said.
The deadly shooting marked the seventh homicide in nine days.
“We just have to echo the words of Chief (Scott) Thurmond when he says. ‘stop and think,’’’ Fitzgerald said. “We’re seeing a lot of these homicides begin with very small motives and we’re choosing violence to resolve those conflicts.”
“This is our second homicide of the day and St. Patrick’s Day weekend,’’ he said. “Every time this weekend comes around, two families are going to remember this is the weekend they lost their loved ones.
The victim is Birmingham’s 26th homicide so far this year. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County there have been 33 homicides, including the 26 in Birmingham.
