David Robertson joining World Series champion
David Robertson is headed for a 16th season on a Major League mound.
The former Paul Bryant High School and Alabama standout has reached an agreement on a contract for the 2024 campaign with the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Morning News and ESPN reported on Thursday night.
Robertson was a free agent after pitching for the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins in 2023. He was 4-2 with a 2.05 earned-run average and 14 saves in 40 relief appearances for the Mets. But after being acquired by the Marlins on July 27 in exchange for minor-leaguers Ronald Hernandez and Marco Vargas, the right-hander posted a 2-4 record with a 5.06 ERA and four saves in 22 appearances for Miami.
Texas won the World Series last season despite its shaky bullpen. During the regular season, the Rangers’ relievers had a 4.77 ERA and blew 33 of 63 save opportunities.
This offseason, Texas has lost relievers Will Smith and Aroldis Chapman in free agency. Smith led the Rangers with 22 saves and 60 relief outings last season.
Robertson has rebounded after an arm injury kept him from pitching in the big leagues between April 14, 2019, to Sept. 1, 2021.
Robertson has pitched in 793 games and has a 63-42 record with a 2.90 ERA and 175 saves. Robertson was an American League All-Star in 2011.
Robertson won a World Series ring with the New York Yankees in 2009. He has a 6-0 record and 3.04 ERA in the postseason.
Reports indicated Robertson would sign a one-year contract worth $11 million to $12 million after passing a physical.
