Dave Doeren calls out Steve Smith for basketball school comment after NC State beats Clemson
Dave Doeren had one point to make more than any other after his NC State Wolfpack defeated Clemson 24-17 on Saturday.
“Tell Steve Smith back in the studio this ain’t a basketball school,” he said in the post-game interview on the field. “He can kiss my ass.”

Earlier in the day, Steve Smith Sr. joined ESPN’s “College GameDay” as the celebrity picker. It wasn’t that Smith picked Clemson to win, he was one of three of the four to do so, it was the comment he made that stuck with the NC State coach.
“Clemson has been struggling,” Smith said earlier Saturday. “They are not the Clemson we’ve loved over the years. But NC State, unfortunately, they are waiting for basketball to start.”
Smith, Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit all picked Clemson, while Desmond Howard was the lone voice for the Wolfpack. Lee Corso missed the broadcast because of a family matter.
KC Concepcion caught two touchdowns passes, including a 72-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter and Payton Wilson returned an interception 15 yards for a score in North Carolina State’s 24-17 win over Clemson on Saturday, sending the Tigers to their second straight loss.
MJ Morris threw both touchdown passes, completing 11 of 20 throws for 138 yards for the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference),
Phil Mafah scored on a pair of 1-yard runs for Clemson (4-4, 2-4). The Tigers, the preseason No. 9 team nationally and defending ACC champions, will enter November in the bottom half of the conference standings.
On its final possession, Clemson reached the N.C. State 48 before stalling with a sack and an incomplete fourth-down pass.
