Dauphin Island works on ‘lengthy cleanup’ after strong overnight storm
Cleanup continues in Dauphin Island after an early morning thunderstorm delivered heavy rain and winds that caused damage and disrupted power.
The storm happened around 3 a.m. and dumped about 5 inches of rain in two hours on the barrier island at the entrance to Mobile Bay, Mayor Jeff Collier told AL.com. Strong winds brought down some trees and signs.
“Winds I’d say were strong tropical storm, if not weak hurricane strength,” he said.
The storm caused significant damage to a restaurant near the marina and to some boats at the marina. Some boats were also damaged.
“Fortunately, we didn’t have any injuries or anything worse, but it was a pretty hectic night,” Collier said.
He noted the rare strength of what began as a simple thunderstorm.
“We’ll get everything cleaned up,” Collier said. “It is going to be a pretty lengthy cleanup process that will probably take us a week or so to get everything back in order from an aesthetics standpoint.”
