Dan Hurley turns down Lakers $70-million offer, will remain at UConn
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports Dan Hurley has turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ offer to be the team’s next coach.
Hurley, who will return to UConn for a potential third straight national title, was offered a six-year, $70 million deal with the Lakers, per the report.
The deal would have made Hurley one of the NBA’s six highest-paid coaches. Hurley, per Wojnarowski, had already been in talks to become one of the highest-paid NCAA coaches at UConn.
Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million deal with UConn after the 2022-23 season. He has gone 68-11 over the last two title-winning seasons and will try to become the second program to win three straight men’s national titles.
Hurley told Wojnarowski on Sunday that the Lakers made a “compelling case” and presented a “compelling vision” for him to become their next coach but that he loves what he has built with the two-time defending national champion Huskies.
Shortly before the ESPN report, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, who was in contact with Hurley throughout the weekend, said the state will “make sure he’s the top-paid college coach” if he remains with the Huskies.
Hurley had the option of taking over one of the most famed franchises in pro sports, not to mention perhaps the chance to coach NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James. But in the end, his stay in the coaching version of the transfer portal was brief — and he will remain at UConn, where he has gone 68-11 over the last two title-winning seasons.
