Damien McDaniel’s alleged victims: 14 Birmingham homicides in 14 months
When Damien McDaniel turns 23 in July, the Fairfield man will likely still be held without bond at Kilby prison awaiting trial in what might be one of the deadliest crime sprees in Birmingham history.
The accusations against McDaniel started days after he turned 21 with the broad daylight shooting of two Birmingham firefighters in 2023, one of them dying five days later.
His alleged crime spree continued into the next year as McDaniel is now charged with killing a UPS employee outside his work in January of last year and a 21-year-old woman outside her home in April.
McDaniel, who is accused of multiple murders for hire, is also accused of killing four people each in two separate mass shootings in 2024.
His alleged victims also include 61-year-old man in his home, a young woman shot in a bar two nights before the Five Points South mass shooting and a young man gunned down in the street the next night.
In addition to the 14 dead, McDaniel is accused of injuring another 30 people with gunfire in a span of 14 months.
Thirteen of those 14 shooting victims died in 2024, a record breaking year for Birmingham homicides.
If guilty of those 13 homicides, McDaniel will have personally been responsible for 8.6% of the 152 violent deaths in Birmingham last year.
Here is a look at the victims in the homicides for which McDaniel is charged:

Firefighter Jordan Melton
Melton, 29, died July 26, 2023 at UAB Hospital, five days after he and firefighter Jamal Jones were shot in the chest and legs at Station 9.
They had just gone on duty on duty at the station, at 1228 27th St. North, when a shooter entered the fire station through the bay door, which typically remains open to be accessible to residents who need assistance.
Jones was critically injured and promoted to the rank of sergeant.
After the shooting, Station 9 remained closed until December 2023.
Melton, affectionately known by many as Chato, has been remembered as an ambitious young man with an infectious smile and an unfailing love for those around him. He not only dreamed of being firefighter since he was a child, but one day hoped to be a fire chief.
“When Jordan loved you, you knew that he loved you,’’ said close friend Larry Williams. “There was no room he could be in and you not know he was there.”
Melton was a witness to the 2021 slaying of 27-year-old Eric Tyler Sledge Jr., a Hoover father. The case went to trial earlier this year, and the suspect was acquitted.
Police have not said whether they have considered that as part of the investigation into Melton’s killing.
Larry Rollins was charged with Sledge’s murder. Rollins’ lawyers argued it was self-defense and he was acquitted.
Rollins and McDaniel are charged with capital murder in the death of a man shot the night after the mass shooting outside the Hush Lounge in Five Points South.
McDaniel is charged with capital murder of a first responder in Melton’s death.
McDaniel is also charged with attempted murder of Jones, who spent months hospitalized after the shooting.

Anthony Lamar Love Jr.
Love was gunned down in an April 9 2024 ambush in the parking lot of a Birmingham UPS facility.
The 44-year-old Alabaster man was a husband and father who had worked at UPS for around 20 years.
Roughly a dozen shots rang out in the parking lot of the Customer Care center and distribution warehouse on Inglenook Lane shortly that evening after 6 p.m.
Love had just finished his work day and was walking through the parking lot to his vehicle.
The suspect confronted him and opened fire. Love collapsed on the ground where he was pronounced dead by firefighters.
McDaniel and 41-year-old Charles Derius Nance are charged with capital murder/murder for hire.
Police did not say who they believe hired McDaniel to kill Love, or why.
“Anthony Love Jr. did not deserve to die at his place of work either and Mia Nickson didn’t deserve to die simply by being at home,‘’ Mayor Randall Woodfin said.

The Sept. 21, 2024 mass shooting outside Hush lounge that killed McCain, 27, Patterson Jr., 26, Holloman, 21, and Booker, 27. Another 17 others were injured in the Five Points South shooting.
Holloman was a single mother whose longtime boyfriend was shot to death two years earlier. She was in college studying to become a teacher and worked as a tax preparer for her family’s business.
“This is a very sad situation for our whole family,’ her mother, Candance Kemp, said. “Anitra was everything to our family.”
“She was like the other mother,’’ she said. “I’m always working, trying to take care of the kids so Anitra was my right-hand man who handled the family while I was gone. She did grocery shopping, the decorating.”
Two of the victims, McCain and Patterson, both were charged in past Birmingham homicides.
McCain was acquitted of murder and attempted murder in 2017 in the shooting death of 15-year-old Kelvon Julius, who police said was killed in retaliation for another shooting in 2015. A young woman was also wounded in the gunfire that killed Kelvon.
Kelvon’s slaying happened June 4, 2016, on 12th Street South. A second suspect pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Patterson was previously charged with murder in the 2021 shooting of 20-year-old Dentarius Maurice Jackson, who was gunned down at the gas pumps at the Chevron on First Ave. North.
In 2022, the murder charge against Patterson was dismissed at the request of prosecutors citing “death, unavailability, and non-cooperation of witnesses.”
Some, if not all, of the victims were out that Saturday night celebrating Jackson-Olin High School’s alumni events, which included a picnic earlier that day.
McCain, who graduated from Jackson-Olin High School in 2015, was known to his friends as “Los” and “Lil Carlos.”
“Carlos was a vibrant little boy that was full of energy. Carlos loved to dress from head to toe and step out on the scene to shine like the rare diamond he was,’’ according to his obituary.”
“He was a fearless, strong Warrior,’’ the obituary read. “Carlos was kind-hearted, and he had the best sense of humor. Los was known to many as a gentle giant with a beautiful soul.”
Patterson grew up playing youth athletics – baseball and football – in the western area.
Booker, family members say, protected Holloman when the shots rang out.
“To know my brother is to love him,’’ his brother, Jerome Booker, posted on Facebook the day after the shooting. “Everybody who know Tahj always knew he will protect anybody around him.”
“After them shots stopped, all I heard was my brother calling my name asking is I’m OK,’’ he wrote. “Whole time he got the girl ReRe (Holloman) in his arms on top of her like he shield her because I know how he is in that situation.”
“Then he said, ‘I’m shot,’ so I grabbed him off her and I seen my brother take his last breath,’’ he wrote.

Jamarcus McIntyre
The Sept. 22 robbery shooting death of 32-year-old Jamarcus McIntyre, who died in a hail of gunfire in the 700 block of 81st Place South came less than 24 hours after the Five Points South shooting.
Along with McDaniel, Crishawn Ja’mel McLemore-Bruce, a 23 of Pleasant Grove man, Larry Rollins, 32; Ny’Quan Lollar, 22; Demarco Beck Jr., 29; and Zachary Holmes, 31, are also charged.
McIntyre’s killing was caught on chilling home surveillance video and showed gunmen killing McIntyre and stealing his backpack.
Authorities say the suspects waited roughly two hours outside the residence until McIntyre was gunned down.
Just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, the city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – alerted officers to shots fired in the South East Lake community, specifically the 700 block of 81st Place South.
Shot Spotter registered at least 30 rounds fired, and there were multiple evidence markers placed in the middle of 81st Place South.
Once on the scene, they found McIntyre unresponsive on the sidewalk. Two others were also wounded, including a woman who, too, was found unresponsive but survived.
Jefferson County prosecutors contend in court documents that McDaniel and Lollar were among three shooters who opened fire on McIntyre in the horrific ambush that was captured on home surveillance video.
Investigators have not yet been able to identify the third shooter.
