Dallas Turner on being chewed out, Nick Saban dancing

Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner was a guest on the SEC Network Wednesday, and gave some insight into the many sides of Nick Saban.

Turner was among three players who appeared at SEC Media Days in Nashville, and gave a wide-ranging interview with Peter Burns and Bryce Young. Among the topics broached were the recruiting process for Turner, a five-star recruit out of south Florida in the 2021 class.

“One thing I would say about Coach Saban during my recruitment process in high school is that he was very honest with me,” Turner said. “He had a vision for me … and a path he wanted me to take.”

Asked if that “vision” has played out the way Saban described it, Turner replied simply, “yes, it has.”

Turner was offered scholarships by most of the major programs in college football, and admitted he grew up a Florida fan. That changed, however, during his first visit to Tuscaloosa.

“I saw what made the university great,” Turner said. “I saw what made it the University of Alabama. I saw the process it takes to get to where it is.”

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Turner has been a contributor since early in his freshman season at Alabama, when he totaled 8.5 sacks in a part-time role. He became a starter in 2022, and contributed four sacks and eight tackles for loss.

Turner has still managed to raise Saban’s ire from time-to-time. He recalled one instance during his freshman year that he was flagged for a facemask penalty.

“I never got in trouble off the field or on the field, but my freshman year, I got a flag one time for a facemask,” Turner said. “I’ve never been … coach has never chewed me out before, like never in my five. I’ve been playing football since I was five years old. I’ve never been chewed out like that before.”

Turner has also seen the lighter side of Saban, however. The coach has been known to cut a rug from time-to-time during team functions, which impressed his team’s star linebacker.

“A good story is the first time I saw Coach Saban dance,” Turner said. “He’s pretty good. He’s got a little wiggle, a little old man two-step.”
