Dallas Turner named finalist for Bednarik Award for nationâs best defender
Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner is a finalist for The Chuck Bednarik Award, named after the 2-time NFL champion and presented to the best defender in college football.
Turner and the other three finalists will find out the winner on Dec. 8 during the ESPN College Football Awards Show. The Bednarik is one of two national awards Turner is up for, including the Lott IMPACT Trophy, presented to a defender who’s made an on- and off-the-field impact.
Alabama has won the Bednarik Award thrice since its inception in 1995. Jonathan Allen and Minkah Fitzpatrick went back-to-back in 2016-17. Turner’s former rushing mate, Will Anderson, accepted the honor a year ago.
This season’s finalists include UCLA’s Laiatu Latu and NC State’s Payton Wilson. Turner, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has set a career-high with nine sacks in 12 games this fall. He has 46 total tackles, two forced fumbles and a pass deflection.
Alabama kicker Will Reichard was named a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, granted to the nation’s best placekicker.
