Dallas Turner happier about Vikings’ win, Will Reichard’s kick than his first sack
Dallas Turner’s first game in an NFL uniform wasn’t that much different for the outside linebacker than his senior season at Alabama – Turner got a sack and Will Reichard kicked a big field goal.
And as he was for 12 out of his 14 games with the Crimson Tide in 2023, Turner played for the winners. But that outcome was different for his new team.
The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 24-23 on Saturday for their first NFL preseason victory since Aug. 24, 2019. Since that 20-9 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota had lost all 10 of its preseason games until Sunday’s outcome stopped the streak.
“I felt it was a very good win,” Turner said. “I think that was the first preseason win in like a couple years, so just being a part of that and just contributing to that, it was very, very positive, very good and just glad to see my teammates smile and laugh and have fun.”
The game nearly extended the Vikings’ preseason losing streak to 11 games, but rookie kicker Will Reichard connected on a 38-yard field goal as time ran out.
Turner and Reichard were teammates at Alabama for the previous three seasons.
“I’m used to seeing it every week,” Turner said. “Seeing my boy Will Reichard hit that dagger, the little walk-off, so that’s nothing new to me because I played college with him and stuff like that.
“But just seeing that, just seeing my teammates happy, smiling, laughing after the game knowing that we got a win was probably the best part of the day.”
In the Vikings’ preseason opener, Turner played the first two series with the Minnesota defense. Turner recorded 10 sacks for the Crimson Tide in 2023, and he registered his first sack as a pro on Saturday.
After the Raiders had driven from their 4-yard line to the Minnesota 3, Turner took down Las Vegas quarterback Aidan O’Connell for a 10-yard loss on a third-and-goal snap.
“It was the first one, so, yeah, you know, I definitely can’t forget about that,” Turner said. “Many more to come, you know.”
Turner also registered another quarterback hit and found his first pro experience not as hard as he expected it to be.
“I mean, we practice against (offensive tackles) Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill every day in practice,” Turner said, “so it’s definitely a good advantage going against those dudes during the week. …
“They prepared me a lot. A lot of the stuff that was displayed (Saturday) afternoon was displayed in practice and stuff like that, too. It’s just the consistency in practice and just building the right habits.”
Minnesota will play the second of its three preseason games against the Cleveland Browns at 3:25 p.m. CDT Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
“Just trying to stack up these days, just trying to stack up games like that,” Turner said. “Just progressively get better every single week.”
