Dallas Turner and other SEC players talk college football video game

Alabama football linebacker Dallas Turner refuses to retire the Playstation 3 that sits in his living room.

“I feel like my PS3 will never be broke,” Turner said with a laugh at SEC Media Days in Nashville.

The video game console, originally released in November of 2006, might still get a break next year. EA Sports, makers of the NCAA Football games of yore, is releasing a new college football title next summer. The old games, namely NCAA 14, the final edition, are what keep Turner’s old PS3 humming along.

He told assembled media members that he still plays the old title frequently.

“I just can’t wait to go home and go play it,” Turner said.

The old games ceased production after a court ruled EA must pay players for their likenesses. The company was willing to do so, but the NCAA wouldn’t allow it.

Now, athletes can make money off of NIL, so EA is bringing the game back. Players like Turner are excited to see themselves in it.

“I play video games every day, I’m not going to lie to you,” Turner said. “It’d be a dream come true, I could play as myself on the video game.”

The future game has recently drawn the ire of the College Football Players Association, which urged players to boycott the game over lack of representation in the process. The Brandr Group, a group licensing company has sued EA, which is working with one of its competitors to license player likenesses, and tried to delay the game.

Among the players at media days, those moves didn’t seem to have much support.

“I grew up playing it so I honestly just want to be in it,” Missouri offensive tackle Javon Foster said. “It’d be fun just seeing me in a video game. I don’t know that much about it, all the other stuff, I just want to be in a video game honestly.”

Foster’s Missouri teammate, defensive lineman Darius Robinson, said he played the game all the time as a child. Back then, the Michigan native favored the Big Ten teams from his home state, along with Florida, due to his love for Gators quarterback Tim Tebow.

Robinson questioned when the new game was actually going to be released.

“We talk about it all the time, but I’ve seen it since my freshman year and the game still hasn’t come out,” he said.

Due to a one-year delay EA announced in November, Robinson likely won’t appear in the game himself. Still, he was excited for his teammates who will.

“That’d be really cool for the players,” Robinson said. “The main thing, people don’t really care about how much money you get, you just want to be in the game.”

Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins isn’t a regular video gamer. But when he’s with friends or teammates, he dabbles in the NBA 2K series and EA’s Madden games.

Judkins said he thought athletes should be compensated, though he didn’t specify a dollar amount. Though only plays occasionally, he said he still saw the value in the series continuing.

“Definitely excited,” Judkins said. “It should be good for the fans.”

EA Sports has not announced a release date for the game, but has said it expects to release it next summer.
