Dale Strong holds commanding fundraising lead in 5th District race

Dale Strong has held a fundraising advantage throughout his bid to become north Alabama’s congressman and, five weeks before election day, that momentum hasn’t slowed.

Now the Republican nominee for the open 5th Congressional District seat, Strong is continuing with the money lead over Democratic opponent Kathy Warner-Stanton. Strong and Warner-Stanton are seeking to replace U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, who ran for Senate and opted not to seek reelection to his House seat.

The election is Nov. 8.

Strong, the longtime chair of the Madison County Commission, has almost $119,000 in cash as of the most recent campaign finance filing deadline of Sept. 30. Warner-Stanton, a Decatur resident who works for a health insurance company, has $7,820 in her campaign account.

The 5th District includes Madison, Limestone, Morgan and Jackson counties as well as the eastern part of Lauderdale County.

Strong was the first candidate to jump into the 5th District race in March 2021 and has since raised more than $1.5 million. Strong’s campaign has been partially self-supported with the candidate having loaned himself $240,000.

Warner-Stanton has essentially funded her campaign with an $80,000 self-loan. Altogether, she has raised $85,150.

Republican voter turnout far exceeded Democrats in the 5th District primaries in May. Republican votes cast in the primary were 101,328 while 15,749 votes were cast in the Democratic primary.
