Dadeville mass shooting ‘something no community should have to endure,’ police chief says
Dadeville Police Chief Jonathan Floyd struggled for the words this morning to communicate the grief of a community reeling, following a shooting at a birthday party Saturday night where at least four people died.
“Maybe a little tough,” Floyd said, stepping to the microphone at a 10 a.m. press conference in Dadeville.
Four people are dead and as many as 20 were reportedly injured following a shooting at a birthday party in Dadeville Saturday night.
The shooting occurred at approximately 10:34 p.m. near the 200 block of Broadnax Street at Mahogany’s Masterpiece dance studio, located in a converted bank, in Dadeville, a town of about 3,000 in Tallapoosa County.
Floyd said Dadeville is “full of wonderful people.”
“I ask you to please keep our community in your prayers,” he said. “I ask you to keep my police department in your prayers. Please do not let this moment define what you think of the City of Dadeville and our fine people. What we’ve dealt with is something no community should have to endure.”
Tallapoosa County School Superintendent Raymond Porter echoed those comments, saying the shooting “does not represent our community. It does not represent our children. And it does not represent who we are.”
Porter said counseling will be available for students tomorrow at schools, and asked local clergy to reach out to victim’s families.
“We will make every effort to comfort those children,” he said. “Don’t lose sight of the fact that those are the ones most impacted by this situation.”
At the press conference, Senior Trooper Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said anyone with tips is asked to call 1-800-392-8011 or email the crime tipline at [email protected].
Officials did not take questions during the press conference, and did not say whether anyone is in custody in connection with the shooting.
