DA: Huntsville police officer who fatally shot man ‘likely saved multiple lives’

Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard on Wednesday said a Huntsville police officer was “legally justified” in fatally shooting a man on Saturday.

In a statement, Broussard said, after a review of video footage, that the officer, who has not been named, “likely saved multiple lives thanks to his quick action.”

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation is looking into what happened Saturday morning after police responded to a domestic violence call in the 6200 block of Rime Village Drive just before 10 a.m.

Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, 38, of Decatur fired at a fleeing female in front of the Huntsville officer, police said.

The officer fired at him, and Sanders died from his wounds. No officers were injured during the incident.

Broussard said in a statement that the incident remains under investigation, but a preliminary review of the case indicated the shooting was justified.

According to Broussard, Sanders broke into a female victim’s apartment while she was home alone with her toddler just before 10 a.m. He then held the two at gunpoint, with the gun to her head for several minutes, he said.

“This was all captured by a security camera inside the apartment,” Broussard said.

“The first responding Huntsville police officer was outside the door of the apartment when the victim managed to escape briefly and run out the front door screaming for help. Mr. Sanders chased her out the front door and fired his weapon at her multiple times in front of the officer. He hit her twice. He continued to fire at her, then turned the gun towards the officer on scene. Within seconds of Mr. Sanders firing at the victim, the officer shot and killed Mr. Sanders.”

According to Broussard, both Sanders’ shots and the officer’s fire were captured on the officer’s body camera.

“Though the investigation is ongoing, our preliminary analysis indicates that the Huntsville police officer involved saved the lives of the victim, her child, and himself. He engaged a shooter who was actively chasing and firing at an innocent woman in her own home. Our office will continue to investigate but does not anticipate any action will be taken against the officer,” the statement reads.
