Cunningham Bounds Coastal Week 14 Player of Week is familiar name
The Week 14 Cunningham Bounds Coastal Player of the Week is accustomed to making big plays – and coming out as the top choice of AL.com voters in the poll.
Mobile Christian quarterback Damien Gatson won player of the week for the third time this season, dominating the vote with 80 percent of the 13,967 ballots cast. Gatson also took top honors in Week 6 and Week 10. It’s also Mobile Christian’s fifth top finish – and third straight – as running back PJ Brown topped the poll the past two weeks.
Gatson, a 6-foot-1, 191-pound junior completed 15-of-18 passes for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns for the top-ranked Leopards in their 42-21 playoff quarterfinal win at Trinity.
Class 3A No. 1 Mobile Christian will host defending champion St. James in the semifinals on Friday.
Gulf Shores linebacker Kingston Lowe was second in the voting after recording 4 sacks and 5 tackles for a loss in the Class 5A No. 1 Dolphins 35-14 win over Headland.
Gulf Shores will host Eufaula on Friday in the semifinals.
Brayden Huebner was third in the balloting as the quarterback for 1A No. 1 Leroy after completing 11-of-16 passes for 154 yards and a pair of TDs. Huebner also ran for 2 touchdowns in the 40-18 win over Brantley.
The Bears host No. 2 Elba on Friday for a shot at the state championship game.
Voting this week for a statewide player of the week from semifinal action begins on Sunday and will run through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 14, more than 22,500 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
