Cullman rallies past Decatur in 2nd half
Cullman controlled the clock for much of the second half for a 21-14 come-from-behind win over Decatur in Friday’s Class 6A, Region 7 matchup.
Jackson Sessions rushed for Cullman’s three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 5:23 left in regulation.
The Bearcats (2-2, 1-1) stopped Decatur (1-3, 0-2) at the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal to seal the win with 41 seconds left.
“It was really going to be who made the stop there at the end,” Cullman coach Danny Stiff said. “We got one at the goal line.”
Decatur got two touchdown passes from Bradin Dupper to Rhys Dorsey. The Red Raiders will try to snap a three-game losing streak next week at Hazel Green in a non-region game.
“We’ve got to keep pounding,” Decatur coach Aairon Savage said.
Cullman trailed Decatur 14-6 with 5:53 left in the third quarter but had scoring drives of that used up 4:19 and 7:20 off the clock down the stretch to regain the lead. The Bearcats led 6-0 in the first half before eventually falling behind 14-6 in the third quarter.
With Decatur driving inside Cullman’s 5 in the game’s final minute, Stiff stressed to his defense to stop Dupper, who rushed for 125 yards. The Bearcats responded by tackling the quarterback at the 1 to end Decatur’s bid for a score.
“He’d been running on us all night so we knew they were going to put the ball in his hands. That’s what we would do if we were them,” Stiff said.
After playing its third straight road game, Cullman will host Lee-Huntsville next week.
