Cullman man drowns trying to retrieve jet ski from Smith Lake

A Cullman man drowned Tuesday in Smith Lake when he tried to retrieve a jet ski that had come loose from the dock.

Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick identified the victim as Cody Lindsey. He was 36.

Authorities received the 911 call at 4:12 p.m. that Lindsey had gone into the water and not resurfaced.

Kilpatrick was at the boat ramp at Smith Lake Park and jumped in the water when he realized his watercraft had come untied.

Multiple agencies responded including the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, the sheriff’s dive team, Trimble Volunteer Fire Department, Logan Volunteer Fire Department, Bethsadia Volunteer Fire Department, Crane Hill Fire Department, the Cullman County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division.

Lindsey’s body was recovered from the lake shortly before 9 p.m.
