Crowd gathers in Walker County to protest death of Tony Mitchell

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered on the steps of the Walker County Courthouse Saturday to protest the death of Anthony “Tony” Mitchell.

The group “Justice for Anthony Mitchell” says on its Facebook page that Mitchell’s death was “massively inhumane and not physically possible the way that the sheriff’s office described it in public.” A lawsuit has been filed over his death.

“We are aiming for the immediate and exact truth from Sheriff Nick Smith or public info officer TJ Armstrong,” said the group that has 3,700 members so far according to its Facebook page.

Mitchell died after being held in the Walker County jail following an arrest by sheriff’s deputies for allegedly firing a gun at deputies. His family and protesters say Mitchell was looked in an isolation cell for two weeks before being finally taken to the hospital where he died.

Sheriff’s department officials have had no comment because of the pending lawsuit.
