Crimson Tide T-shirt, camo poncho: The wonderfully wacky wardrobe of an Alabama Oscar contender
The tipping point, for us, came at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Daniel Scheinert, newly crowned as a superstar filmmaker from Alabama, attended the ceremony with his professional parter, Daniel Kwan, and grabbed a ton of trophies for their groundbreaking movie, “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” It was a festive occasion, cementing the Daniels’ primacy during the 2023 awards season and setting the stage for a possible sweep at the Oscars, where “Everything Everywhere” has 11 nominations, including best picture, best director and best original screenplay.
You might think that Scheinert, 35, would gussy up for the Indie Spirit Awards, hiring a pricey stylist or wearing a fancy tuxedo. Nope! The acclaimed filmmaker showed up in a long, voluminous camouflage poncho. It flowed down to his calves and looked, well, like something a hunter would wear in a duck blind in the pouring rain.
A green plaid shirt, thick black leggings and ankle-skimming black boots (with a colorful tongue and overlapping flap) completed the ensemble. Of course, Scheinert was wearing his trademark eyeglasses holder, just in case those specs decided to take a walk.
And we could not love him more.
Scheinert’s freewheeling fashion sense is unexpected, radical and refreshing — just like the oddball movie that’s made him famous. He’s making cinema history as a talented nonconformist, challenging the entertainment world to broaden its horizons with a prestige movie that features talking rocks, hot dog hands, googly eyes, a raccoon chef and an “everything bagel” that just might be an evil black hole.
How wonderful to see Scheinert’s wardrobe reflect that aesthetic, especially when he’s surrounded by celebrities decked out in couture designs and million-dollar jewelry, all puffed and posing for the cameras. Boring! Predictable! Snooze-worthy! (Hollywood glamour might be traditional, but we’re fighting sleep just thinking about it.)
Looking back at Scheinert’s clothing choices for major entertainment events — the annual Oscar nominees luncheon, for example, or the Producers Guild Awards — we see him wearing outfits that seem culled from a vintage flea market or pulled from grandpa’s closet. (The camo poncho, his parents say, is likely to be a steal from Scheinert’s grandfather, a hunter in Shelby County.)
Check out the photos in the gallery at the top of this post, and you’ll see Scheinert rocking a crazy-quilt sweater, a mustard field jacket, another camo raincoat and a floppy piece of outerwear with, um, Southwestern flair.
The piece de resistance, in our opinion, is a Crimson Tide T-shirt Scheinert sported for the Sundance Film Festival in 2019, when he was promoting his movie “The Death of Dick Long.” Endearingly rumpled, old-school and goofy, the shirt now seems like a signature statement — a “lewk,” if you will — from an unconventional up-and-comer who’s proud of his roots.
As it turns out, Scheinert’s mother, Becky Hallman Scheinert, doesn’t always agree with his wardrobe choices. “Now, he and I will continue to arm-wrestle and argue about what he wears,” she said in a recent interview with AL.com.
Mom also revealed that her son intends to wear a tuxedo to the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Sure, he’ll be in elite company there, competing against luminaries such as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron for the top awards. A formal tux, though? Please say it ain’t so.
But before disappointment sets in, funky fashionistas, consider this: Scheinert’s mom said he bought the tux several years ago at Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro. “Lo and behold, it fit his very tall, very skinny frame,” she said.

Scheinert has worn this tuxedo before, Becky said, so we started searching for it in photos of previous events. A possible candidate has emerged, via a slim black suit that looks kinda formal and has bright green buttons adorning the cuffs. Scheinert paired it with a pastel flowered tie and pocket handkerchief at this year’s Directors Guild of America Awards, nudging the retro suit into cheerful territory. (Easter corsage meets “Mad Men”? We’re here for it.)
Moreover, Scheinert and his colleagues from “Everything Everywhere” appear to be having great fun during the 2023 awards season, romping on the red carpet, mugging in photo studios and posing with silly abandon in media rooms. Stiff and stuffy just isn’t in their playbook, and that’s a delightful thing.
According to IMDb, “Everything Everywhere” has earned more than 350 award nominations of various kinds, from regional film festivals to powerhouse organizations like the Academy. The movie has more than 300 wins to date — talk about a multiverse — and we’re betting that Scheinert has made a significant fashion statement at every event he’s attended.
Unfortunately, Scheinert has never discussed this important topic — his Man of the People wardrobe — in a public forum. And we can only imagine the discussions he’s had with Mom. (”But I really like that Big Al T-shirt!”)
Style tips? As far as we’re concerned, Alabama’s most audacious and authentic filmmaker has no need of these. Never change, Daniel Scheinert — well, maybe add a few choice items to the closet chaos — and let your freak flag fly.
