Crime Stoppers Christmas tree will honor those killed in Birmingham area

Loved ones of those lost in Birmingham area homicides are invited to remember the victims by helping Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama decorate Christmas trees in their memory.

“The holiday season is a difficult for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to violence,’’ said Crime Stoppers Director Bob Copus.

The tragedy of dealing with that type of tragedy is an unimaginable struggle, he said.

“We want more than anything else to let these families know that they are not forgotten,’’ Copus said. “The person they lost matters to them and to our community.”

Crime Stoppers will provide wooden ornaments on which family members can write their loved ones’ names and a message to them.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Crime Stoppers’ headquarters at 2121 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard. The offices are on the 11th floor of the 2121 building.

Copus said there will be other times that family members can hang an ornament on the trees.

This is the first time Crime Stoppers has hosted the event, but plan to do so moving forward.

“The pain and loss do not end when the story is no longer in the public view,’’ Copus said. “Crime victims face a continuing effort for information, answers and justice.”

“Our hope is to bring a few hours of holiday joy with support and caring,’’ he said. “An ornament with a name on it may not seem like much to some, but to these families we want it to be a testament to remembrance.”
