Crews looking for person after Alabama chase ends in submerged vehicle
Morgan County authorities say a chase following an armed robbery ended in a creek with at least one occupant of the fleeing vehicle unaccounted for this afternoon.
Decatur police said 911 dispatchers received a report of a robbery at Casa Santiago, 2812 Spring Ave. S.W., at about 12:53 p.m.
Acting on a description of the vehicle, Decatur police’s patrol division attempted a stop, but a pursuit developed along U.S. 31 South.
During the chase, according to police, the driver of the vehicle lost control, crossed over the median and eventually ran into Flint Creek near Bowels Bridge Road, submerging the vehicle.
One of the vehicle’s occupants swam across the creek to shore and was detained there.
A second occupant was last seen struggling to stay afloat down stream and went under before those on the scene could render aid.
The Morgan County Rescue Squad and Decatur police are continuing to search for the person.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting an investigation into the crash.
