Cowbells, now 12th Man: Alabama readies for more crowd noise ahead of Texas A&M
Max Wright still remembers the noise. The Texas A&M tight end was on the Aggie’s field goal unit when it huddled for what would be a game-winner in 2021. As Seth Small’s kick sailed through, the 106,915 in attendance — then the second most in school history — erupted.
Two years later, Alabama football is again preparing for the noise. Two straight Southeastern Conference road games have offered two different types of hostile fan environments for the 10th-ranked Crimson Tide (4-1, 2-0). Last week, it was Starkville and its trademark cowbells. This Saturday (2:30 p.m., CT) it’ll be 12th Man at Kyle Field.
“It’s really important,” head coach Nick Saban said Wednesday night. We’ve been emphasizing it all week, but tomorrow is always the day that we practice with noise. I know the centers and the quarterbacks have worked a little bit extra on that with noise this week.
“But tomorrow will be the day that we need to really go through the whole practice and be able to deal with noise, and that’s really when you can see how much it’s going to impact the players. We’ve had some issues with the snap count, so hopefully, that’s not going to be a problem for us and we can get that resolved.”
Against the Bulldogs, there was a moment in the first half where Milroe stepped up to change the play and center Seth McLaughlin snapped amid the roar of cowbells and Alabama nearly avoided a turnover. In addition to the snapping issues, Crimson Tide linemen have also struggled with false start penalties at times.
Ultimately, the noise wasn’t too much of a hindrance in Alabama’s 40-17 win. Quarterback Jalen Milroe threw for 164 yards on 10-of-12 passing, he also ran it for two touchdowns and 69 yards.
Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams each also averaged over 4 yards per carry. With four sacks and three interceptions, the UA defense also silenced the cowbells and saw the crowd empty in the fourth quarter.
“Definitely going to be louder,” Milroe said. “It’s going to take preparation throughout the week for us., We’ll have a plan to attack that. It’s going to be a challenge for us, playing a tough opponent, playing in one of the best environments in the country, so we’re excited, at the same time have to be prepared in that moment.”
