Couple married 50 years and killed in fire at Midfield home now identified

Authorities have released the names of a husband and wife who were killed last month when fire swept through their Midfield home.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Odis Edward Ward, 72, and Vanessa Avery Ward, 71. The victims, married for 50 years, were positively identified through dental records, Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Thursday.

Midfield Fire and Rescue responded to the home in the 1200 block of Woodfall Drive at 6:48 a.m. on Feb. 22.

A neighbor called 911 to report the blaze across the street, and said there were people inside.

Firefighters arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. An elderly family member was rescued and taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The Wards were pronounced dead on the scene at 6:53 a.m.

The couple’s service was held March 1 at Faith Memorial Chapel.

The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
