Country music star hospitalized after cancer surgery complications
The Mavericks announced Thursday that their frontman, Raul Malo, took a turn for the worse with his cancer battle.
He is currently in a hospital receiving treatment.
“Hey everyone, unfortunately The Mavericks will no longer be performing with Dwight (Yoakam) this weekend in OKC (Feb. 21) & Hidalgo (Feb. 23),” the post stated. “Raul has been experiencing complications from his December surgery and is back in the hospital getting the care he needs to make a full recovery.
“We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as Raul’s treatment continues.”
Malo had surgery on Dec. 10 to remove a tumor from his liver.
“These shows will be a good barometer for me to be able to gauge my stamina,” Malo said earlier this month, per Taste of Country. “Our sets run approximately an hour with this lineup. The only shows moved so far this year (aside from the cruise) are our recent headlining shows. They conflicted with my chemo schedule (and we need to adhere to that obviously).”
Malo, 59, has been the Mavericks’ lead vocalist since the band was founded in 1989. The hits include “O What a Thrill,” “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” and “There Goes My Heart.”
