Country music icon gets emotional over personal sacrifices: ‘I’ve carried my pain’
While Dolly Parton is one of the most iconic country music entertainers in the history of the business, the 79-year-old legend recently opened up about the personal sacrifices it took to reach the well-deserved status.
She opened up during the unveiling a new exhibit “Dolly Parton: Journey of a Seeker” at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“I’ve sacrificed time with family and friends … I gave up vacations for work without end,” she said, per Parade. “Twenty-four seven, 365, but I was willing to make that sacrifice. But empty or full, I’ve carried my pain. But you don’t drink the water if you don’t dig the well.
“Grindstones and rhinestones have made up my life, and you ask, ‘Was it worth the sacrifice?’ Well, I reckon it was because I’m here tonight.”
In March, Parton announced her husband of 60 years, Carl Dean, died at the age of 82.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” she said. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
