Could Alabama play in Ireland? Kalen DeBoer leaves door open for future international game
The 2024 college football season begins Saturday, when Florida State and Georgia Tech face off in Dublin. It’s the third straight year with a Week 0 game in Ireland.
No SEC team has ever played in an Ireland game. On Thursday, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked whether he’d ever consider taking the Crimson Tide there, or to another international site to open a season.
“I think there’s a right time,” DeBoer said. “And when you’ve been at a program for a while and you want to continue to expand situations, things like that, I’ve looked into those different times, different places. I think it’d be tough, first year or two, to do something like that, but there’s just more and more things you want to put in front of those guys and experiences you want to give them, so I think that’s pretty cool.”
Notre Dame beat Navy in Dublin last season. The 2022 edition of the game featured Northwestern beating Nebraska.
Saturday’s game will be played in Aviva Stadium, which usually houses the Irish national soccer and rugby teams. The Ireland game is scheduled to continue for several years, Iowa State and Kansas State set to face off in 2025, and Pittsburgh and Wisconsin taking the trip in 2027
DeBoer isn’t the only SEC coach to open the door for a trip to Ireland. LSU’s Brian Kelly, who was scheduled to make the trip with Notre Dame in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic interfered, has said he’s trying to get the Tigers to Dublin.
“We’ve done such a great job with the LSU brand throughout the country, I think the next step for us is international,” Kelly said at SEC Media Days. “I felt the travel there is so clean and easy. Ireland has been such a great destination for other football programs to go and play.”
Alabama opens its 2024 season on Aug. 31, on American soil, facing Western Kentucky at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
