Corner whips Westminster Christian to earn 4A finals berth
Third-ranked Corner used a pair of 5-run innings to pull away and capture the Class 4A baseball semifinals on Friday with an 11-3 win over Westminster Christian in Huntsville.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, but jumped in front with 5 runs in the top of the third and tacked on 5 more in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Westminster scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and Corner tacked on a run in the seventh.
Corner improved to 31-7 on the year with the Game 3 win in the best-of-three playoff semifinal series. The Jackets split with the Wildcats on Thursday, losing the first game 4-3 and winning the second 7-5.
Coach Caleb Holt’s Jackets will play American Christian (27-16) in the state tournament finals on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Choccolocco Park in Oxford. Game 2 and 3, if necessary, will be at Jacksonville State University’s Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on Thursday beginning at 4.
Corner starter Brendan Conner went the distance on Friday, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 2.
Corner had 9 hits on the day to 7 for Westminster Christian and the Yellow Jackets took advantage of 8 walks. Both teams finished with 1 error.
Maxon Hill led the winners at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Brodie Dunlap was 1-for-4 with a 3-run double. He also walked in the fourth inning to bring in a run.
Westminster’s Sean Lapinskes was 3-for-4 with a double that just missed leaving the ballpark in the opening inning. He also pitched the final 3 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts for the Wildcats (27-10).
Corner will be playing for its first state championship. American Christian has five championships, two in Class 2A and three in 1A – the last in 2011.
