Coosa Christian rolls up 94 points to beat Cedar Bluff
Cedar Bluff began playing football in 1930, and the Tigers suffered their most lopsided defeat Friday night.
Coosa Christian rolled to a 94-7 victory at Phillip Ellen Stadium in Gadsden, as the Conquers played for the first time since the AHSAA required to Coosa Christian to forfeit for four victories for playing ineligible players. It’s one of the most lopsided outcomes in recent AHSAA football history.
The 94 points is the most points Coosa Christian has ever scored in a single game and the most Cedar Bluff has ever allowed in a single game. The AHSAA online record book lists 17 games in which a team scored more than 100 points in a single game, but the most recent was in 1970.
Coosa Christian coach Mark O’Bryant acknowledged he ran up the score and told The Gadsden Times it was in response to Cherokee County Schools Superintendent Mike Welsh attempting to “sabotage” the Coosa Christian program. The paper reported O’Bryant did not elaborate.
Welsh, a longtime member of the AHSAA Central Board, served more than 20 years as the principal at Spring Garden High before being elected as the superintendent in Cherokee County. He is the son of legendary Spring Garden basketball coach Dale Welsh, for whom the Spring Garden Gymnasium is named.
