Conviction, filming, CFP, Bayside streak: Down in Alabama

Clardy’s killer convicted

For the second time in just a few days, a cop killer in Alabama has been found guilty of capital murder.

AL.com’s Paul Gattis reports that LaJeromeney Brown has been found guilty in the 2019 killing of Huntsville Police Officer Billy Clardy III.

Brown will be sentenced to death if at least 10 of the 12 jurors vote for it today. He previously spent four years in prison after pleading guilty in 2013 to trafficking cocaine.

Clardy was 48 years old.

Filming in Lower Alabama

Filming for the Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck” is taking place in the Mobile Bay area, reports AL.com’s Lawrence Specker.

It’s an independent movie with Mike Flanagan as the director. Flanagan’s filmed in Mobile before, including for “Gerald’s Game,” also based on a King story.

“The Life of Chuck” will star Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill. Hiddleston, of course, played Loki in the series and Marvel movies, and everyone remembers Hamill’s turn as Wayne Stein in Earth Angel.

CFP rankings: Alabama No. 8

The first College Football Playoff rankings are out, and 7-1 Alabama landed at No. 8.

The top four teams get into the playoffs. Right now, the top five teams in the rankings are unbeaten — in order, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Washington. You also have one-loss teams Oregon and Texas ranked ahead of Alabama.

For Alabama, the job is to win the rest of the games it plays (isn’t that always the objective?) A perfect finish would make the Tide a one-loss SEC champion — enough to almost certainly get a playoff ticket punched.

The end of a long streak

Bayside Academy’s volleyball team lost in the state playoffs Tuesday, reports AL.com’s Dennis Victory.

The last time Bayside Academy was eliminated from the playoffs was 2001 — 22 years ago and before any of this season’s players were born. That year’s Iron Bowl featured coaches Tommy Tuberville and Dennis Franchione. The state of Alabama’s governor was a Democrat.

How about this for a streak: Coach Ann Schilling coached Bayside to 21 consecutive state titles in Classes ranging from 2A to 6A.

Top-ranked Mountain Brook was the team that finally unseated Bayside, beating the Admirals in five sets.
