‘Confidential’ settlement reached in suit accusing Alabama doctor of groping, kissing patients
An Alabama doctor has reached a “confidential” settlement in a lawsuit brought by a group of women who accused him of misconduct.
The former patients in 2018 sued Michael Dick, who was an internist in Decatur, alleging that he groped and kissed them against their will during appointments.
Eric Artrip, an attorney representing the 29 women, said the “exact terms of the settlement are confidential,” but told AL.com that Dick’s former patients split the settlement equally.
“They were all very pleased with the result,” said Artrip.
Dick and his former patients reached a settlement in June through mediation, court records show. On Wednesday, Morgan County Circuit Judge Jennifer Howell approved the settlement and dismissed the lawsuit.
“The settlement does not indicate that the defendant acknowledges any wrongdoing and Dr. Dick has given sworn testimony that he did not engage in any wrongful conduct,” said Joel Williams, attorney for Dick.
Williams said confidentiality in lawsuit settlements “is a standard provision not unique to this case.”
In addition to being sued, Dick was arrested and charged with harassment in 2017. A Morgan County jury in February found him not guilty of the criminal charges.
The allegations against Dick first became public in 2018 after several patients said he inappropriately touched them or kissed them without consent.
He had also been found not guilty of sexual abuse in 2022 in a case stemming from similar allegations.
The civil lawsuit was initially brought by 36 former patients but ended up with 29 women after a few dropped out.
While the resolution marks the end of civil litigation, some former patients recently gave testimony to the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners as Dick is in the process of trying to get his medical license reinstated.
The board in 2019 suspended Dick’s medical license after he was indicted.
The board met to hear Dick’s case last week and is expected to have a final decision next month.
