Commanders cut former Alabama prep standout
Washington’s release of Carson Wentz got the headlines on Monday, but the quarterback wasn’t the only player cut by the Commanders on Monday.
Washington also terminated the contract of defensive back Bobby McCain. The former Oxford High School standout had one season remaining on a two-year, $10 million deal signed last season.

An eight-year veteran who has played slot corner, outside corner, free safety and strong safety during his career, McCain had started 16 games in each of the past two seasons for the Commanders after spending his first six seasons with the Miami Dolphins.
McCain reached career highs with 54 solo tackles and 76 combined tackles during the 2022 season, when he played 93 percent of Washington’s defensive snaps for the second year in a row.
The Commanders’ decision gives McCain a 16-day jump on free agency. NFL players with expiring contracts will become free agents on March 15.
Between Oxford and entering the NFL as a fifth-round selection of the Dolphins in the 2015 draft, McCain was a four-year starter at Memphis.
