Columbus, Indigenous Peoples’ days 2022: Some schools closed, open
Monday, Oct. 10, 2022 is recognized as Columbus Day, American Indian Heritage Day and Fraternal Day by Alabama.
State offices and courts will be closed; many state and local government employees will have the day off.
However, since local school districts set their own calendars, check your district site and PowerSchool notices for specific instructions.
Some schools are holding teacher inservice days with students at home; others are starting Fall Break. And some districts will hold parent-teacher conferences on the day.
Still others, like Tuscaloosa City Schools, are keeping normal operations. School officials sent out a notice Friday reminding parents that school will be in session Monday.
Some universities, such as the University of Alabama, will have regular operations on the holiday.
President Joe Biden formally recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021. It is not a federal holiday. Many states and local governments now recognize the occasion instead of Columbus Day on the second Monday in October.
Alabama first celebrated American Indian Heritage Day in 2000.
Fraternal Day was first celebrated in Alabama in 1915 on the second Thursday of October. It was meant as a time to honor the work of fraternal organizations and the Alabama Legislature later ordered it moved to coincide with the Columbus holiday. The holiday focused not just on traditional fraternal organizations, such as the Masons, but also on veterans’ groups and other clubs.
