A Columbiana man has been charged with attempted murder and could face more charges following a shooting Sunday afternoon in Jackson County.

Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen said the incident happened at about 4 p.m. outside Foodland in Stevenson on U.S. 72.

Investigators say a man and woman, who had been in a relationship, were talking in the parking lot. Channing Anwara Mitchell, 30, of Columbiana, is a relative of the woman, Harnen said.

Mitchell went to his vehicle, retrieved his gun and began firing rounds, aiming at the ex-boyfriend.

However, one bullet struck a man getting a drink out of a machine at the store. Other rounds went into several vehicles and the building, Harnen said.

“They were sprayed all over the place,” he said.

The shooting victim, wounded in the lower body, was transported to Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital and is expected to recover. Mitchell turned himself later to Stevenson police.

He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, shooting into an unoccupied vehicle and shooting into an occupied building. Mitchell is being held without bond.
