Columbiana city council member arrested in Calera

A Columbiana city council member was arrested Tuesday morning in Calera.

Vickie Mizzell, who represents the city’s Ward 2, is charged with filing a false report with law enforcement, Calera police Chief David Hyche confirmed.

Under Alabama state law, a person commits the crime of false reporting to law enforcement authorities if he or she knowingly makes a false report or causes the transmission of a false report to law enforcement authorities of a crime or relating to a crime.

The crime is a Class A misdemeanor.

Hyche said he couldn’t disclose the allegations against Mizzell. The alleged crime reportedly took place during another criminal investigation.

Mizzell declined comment except to say, “I’m still totally confused about it.”

Mizzell has been a council member since 2020. She formerly served as the chief magistrate in Shelby County.
