Colts keeping center Ryan Kelly, NFL team’s GM says
In 2019, 2020 and 2021, Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly made the AFC Pro Bowl team. But in 2022, when the Colts’ point output crashed from ninth in the NFL in 2021 to 30th among the league’s 32 teams, the former Alabama All-American’s play drew criticism.
Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard said the Colts won’t be making a change at center, although they might have the opportunity to do so this offseason.

From 2018 through 2020, the Colts had the luxury of using five offensive linemen to take most of the snaps – Kelly at center, Quenton Nelson at left guard, Mark Glowinski at right guard, Anthony Castonzo at left tackle and former Auburn standout Braden Smith at right tackle.
In 2021, Eric Fisher came aboard for Castonzo.
But while Kelly, Nelson and Smith again played more than 1,000 snaps apiece in 2022, five other offensive linemen started games for Indianapolis.
The result? Only the Denver Broncos had their quarterback sacked more than the Colts’ QB. Indianapolis yielded 60 sacks in 2022. With the Castonzo-Nelson-Kelly-Glowinski-Smith line, the Colts gave up a total of 61 sacks across three seasons.
Five of last season’s sacks were blamed on Kelly, equaling the number he yielded in the 2020 and 2021 seasons put together.
While attending the NFL’s annual meeting this week in Phoenix, Ballard said teams had inquiry about trading for Kelly and cornerback Kenny Moore, another 2021 Pro Bowler who didn’t have the same kind of season at cornerback in 2022.
Ballard said the Colts aren’t interest in doing those deals.
“They’re both great Colts, and we’re glad they’re here,” Ballard said. “We had some calls on them. But at the end of the day, they’re good football players for us, and they’re good people. When you got a good football player that is a great person and a good fit, it makes it hard to move away from those guys.
“Right now, they’re Colts, and in the foreseeable future I see them being Colts.”
Kelly has two seasons remaining on a four-year, $50 million contract extension. He picked up a $1 million roster bonus on March 19.
Indianapolis hasn’t brought in an offensive lineman in free agency, but they do hold the fourth overall pick among their nine selections in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Colts have a new head coach and offensive coordinator for the 2023 season. Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen is the head coach, and he has Jim Bob Cooter as his offensive coordinator, although Steichen will call the plays.
Since joining Indianapolis as the 18th player picked in the 2016 NFL Draft, Kelly has started all 100 games in which he’s played.
At Alabama, Kelly was a three-year starter. As a senior for the Crimson Tide’s CFP national championship game in 2015, Kelly received consensus All-American recognition and won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center.
