College Football Week 8 picks: One-loss teams like Alabama at huge disadvantage for playoffs

Halfway through the season there is not only single team that controls its own destiny to reach the college football playoff.

That sounds crazy. Of course, Georgia will be in the playoff if the Bulldogs go undefeated in the regular season, then win the SEC Championship Game. But the same can also be said for Oklahoma, Washington, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Florida State and North Carolina.

Let’s say Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington, Michigan and Florida State all finish the season undefeated. One of the five would be left out of the playoffs.

That almost certainly won’t happen, but it does illuminate how much has to happen for one-loss teams like Alabama, Texas and Oregon to get in championship contention. For now, all those teams can do is keep winning and expect a few upsets elsewhere.
