Top Week 5 College Football games: No. 10 Utah vs. No. 19 Oregon State (-4)

It’s not often you get quality matchups outside of the Saturday slate of CFB games, but Utah vs. Oregon State brings plenty of intrigue.

The Utes have gotten the job done without start passer Cam Rising, who tore his ACL in January and has yet to lace up in the 2023 season. Rising has been questionable ahead of each Utah game and his timeline to return is a mystery.

Nate Johnson has done well in relief of Rising, but Utah’s potential grows if QB1 can come back at full strength this year. The Utes’ defense has been stellar, allowing only nine points per game, including a 14-7 Week 4 victory over No. 22 UCLA.

Oregon State was rolling before a 38-35 setback to No. 21 Washington State in Pullman last week. D.J. Uiagalelei rolled in the Beavers’ first two games but fell off in Weeks 3 and 4. Uiagalelei completed just 50% of his passes for 198 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Cougars.

Home-field advantage will be crucial for the Beavers in Week 5. Oregon State has lost just one game in Corvallis in the past two seasons.

Best College Football games of Week 5: No. 11 Notre Dame (-5.5) vs. No. 17 Duke

Duke isn’t just a basketball school anymore. Since head coach Mike Elko’s hiring last season, the Blue Devils are 13-4 and have lost only one game in Durham.

Dual-threat QB Riley Leonard is the pulse of Duke’s offense, with 778 passing yards, 238 rushing yards, and six total touchdowns. The Blue Devils allow eight points per game, the fourth-best mark in FBS, and have forced eight turnovers.

Notre Dame is in survival mode for the remainder of the season following a 17-14 home loss to No. 6 Ohio State last Saturday. Sam Hartman was a leading passer in FBS going into the game but only managed 175 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

The Fighting Irish will be hungry for a victory but must overcome a ruckus environment at Wallace Wade Stadium as the Cameron Crazies pack the stands to cheer on Duke football.

Top Week 5 College Football games: No. 13 LSU (-2.5) vs. No. 20 Ole Miss

Ole Miss was riding high until a reality check came in the form of a 24-10 Week 4 loss vs. Alabama. Lane Kiffin had a prime opportunity to finally take down Nick Saban and the Tide, but a lack of offense and the inability to slow down Jase McClellan sunk those hopes.

Ole Miss can’t dwell too long with LSU coming to Oxford.

LSU has looked phenomenal since dropping the season opener to Florida State. The Tigers shellacked Mississippi State 41-14 and topped underrated Arkansas 34-31.

The Tigers have controlled the Magnolia Bowl in recent years. LSU has a 10-3 record vs. Ole Miss dating back to 2010, and the Tigers lead the head-to-head series 63-41-4.

Week 5 College Football games to watch: No. 24 Kansas vs. No. 3 Texas (-16.5)

Kansas and Duke are playing in two of the top five matchups of the weekend, but the calendar hasn’t flipped to March yet. The Jayhawks were streaky in 2022 and ranked as high as No. 19 in the AP Top 25, but Kansas has remained consistent this season, starting 4-0.

Kansas is fresh off a 38-27 triumph over BYU, who was receiving AP Top 25 votes going into Week 4. Jalon Daniels’ 705 passing yards and five touchdowns combined with Devin Neal’s 394 rushing yards and five scores make Kansas’ offense a legitimate threat to the Longhorns.

Texas may actually be back this time, as the Longhorns have its highest AP poll ranking since 2009. The highlight of Texas’ season is a 34-24 victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium that saw Quinn Ewers throw for 349 yards and three touchdowns.

UT has one of the best receiving groups in the nation, led by Ja’Tavion Sanders’ 268 yards.

Best Week 5 College Football games: No. 8 USC (-21.5) vs. Colorado

The Deion Sanders and Colorado hype may come to a screeching halt if the Buffaloes suffer another crushing loss. Colorado’s explosive offense was defused in a 42-6 loss to Oregon that could’ve been more severe had the Ducks not pulled its starters early in the second half.

Oregon had 522 yards of offense to Colorado’s 199 yards. Travis Hunter’s absence was monumental for the Buffaloes, though it’s unlikely the outcome would’ve changed if Hunter was available for the game.

The Buffaloes should have an easier time moving the rock against a subpar Trojans defense. USC allows 20 points per game, seventh-most in the Pac-12, and have yet to face a worthy adversary.

USC was on upset alert in Week 4 vs. Arizona State because the Sun Devil’s offense was able to keep pace with Caleb Williams and Co. until midway through the fourth quarter. Eventually, the Trojans pulled away and earned a 42-28 victory, but there’s no question that USC’s defense will hamstring them in Pac-12 play.
