College Football Week 14: A win over Georgia is all Alabama should need to make playoff

Members of the College Football Playoff Committee are supposed to be unbiased, but you have to know they are cheering for Georgia and Louisville this weekend.

Alabama is the true agent of chaos in the eight-team race for four playoff spots. If the Crimson Tide beats Georgia, then there will be the thorny issue of ranking Alabama, plus the even more difficult task of comparing Georgia to other one-loss teams.

The Alabama part of this is explained expertly by The Athletic’s Stewart Mandell. He believes those comparing Alabama to Texas (which won in Tuscaloosa earlier this year) are missing the point. Mandell points out that it’s very likely that an Alabama win against Georgia will lift the Tide all the way to No. 2 or 3 in the final rankings. There won’t be a need for a head-to-head comparison between the Tide and Longhorns.

As for Louisville, the Cardinals could beat Florida State and eliminate the entire ACC from the playoff conversation.

It’s going to be crazy, and it starts with Friday night’s elimination game between Oregon and Washington.
