‘College football ready:’ Alabama HS star reclassifies into Class of 2025
Auburn High running back Omar Mabson announced on social media Monday that he was reclassifying into the Class of 2025.
The current junior led the Tigers to the No. 1 ranking for much of this season and a spot in the Class 7A quarterfinals.
“He’s ready,” Auburn coach Keith Etheredge said. “This kid is ready to play college football.”
The 5-foot-8, 210-pound standout rushed for 1,382 yards and 28 touchdowns on 201 carries this season. He also caught 11 passes for 185 yards and three TDs. Etheredge said Mabson’s offers include Georgia, Auburn, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina and Vanderbilt.
“He’s an unbelievable young man,” he said. “He has all the tools. He benches 375. He has a 4.4 40. He’s great in the classroom. He does all the little things right. He’s one of those kids you love to coach. I would love to coach him for another year, but I know that is kind of selfish. He’s ready to play college football.”
Etheredge said there are still “a bunch of schools” trying to sign Mabson. He’s expected to go through the recruiting process for the next few weeks and sign during the late period in February. He said Mabson’s style reminds him of former Georgia star Nick Chubb.
“All of his original offers are still out there,” Etheredge said. “He’s such a good player. Any school that has any sense will make room for him because he can come in next year and make an impact. He can do multiple things. If someone wanted to redshirt him, it would give him time to be bigger, stronger and faster but he’s college football ready now. No question.”
A year ago, Saraland star and two-time Mr. Football Ryan Williams reclassified and made and instant impact at the University of Alabama this year.
