College football photographer hit in groin, goes viral: It ‘hurt for about 40 minutes’

A photographer at the Wisconsin-Rutgers game got a great shot. He also took a pretty good one.

Scarlet Knights quarterback Gavin Wimsatt overthrew a fourth-and-2 pass and hit Ethan Bacon, a Big Ten Network photographer. The ball hit Bacon in the groin, creating a viral moment Saturday on social media.

Some good for Bacon did come from the unfortunate bounce of the ball. He said he is proud his good work from the game was recognized even if it took a backseat to his personal discomfort.

“This was not in my plans, but I’m proud of the shot, and the shot is getting a lot of attention, which I’m proud of because the shot is beautiful,” Bacon told BadgerExtra. “I’m glad that it’s not just me getting hit in the (groin) that’s making the round, but the shot itself is also making the rounds, which I’m proud of because the shot is something I’m proud of.

“The shot comes first, right? That’s the mentality of a shooter. I’m just focusing on the shot, getting the ball in the frame and keeping the focus the whole way. You’re not really in a situation where you can protect yourself. You look at it, you look at the video and you’re like, ‘How could he not see it coming? How’s he not bracing himself?’ But you’re not really in that mindset, so you don’t really know it’s coming until it’s too late.”

As far as dealing with his discomfort, Bacon told Brian Fonseca of The Star-Ledger (Newark, N.J.) that it “hurt for about 40 minutes, and now it’s all good and it’s a funny story to tell and a great shot to have.”

Bacon also took to social media to make light of the situation.
