Cole Woods boosts 6A No. 5 Muscle Shoals past 7A James Clemens
Cole Woods accounted for four touchdowns as Class 6A, No. 5-ranked Muscle Shoals beat 7A James Clemens 42-28 at Madison City Schools Stadium on Friday.
The senior quarterback scored on a 2-yard run, had two TD passes to Hadden Vance of 2 and 32 yards and caught a 3-yarder from Vance. The Trojans (5-0) led 28-14 at halftime.
Jaquess Greene scored on a 26-yard run in the second quarter and an 80-yard kick return to open the second half.
The host Jets (4-2) had an 80-yard return for a touchdown by Devon Cooper on the game’s opening kickoff. Ty Marsh scored on a 2-yard run and had two touchdown passes to Logan Eggart of 3 and 27 yards.
“I thought the coaches had a great game plan,” Muscle Shoals coach Scott Basden said, “and I thought our kids played really hard. Obviously, there’s some things we’ve got to get better on, keep improving. Overall, I’m pleased with our effort.”
Play of the game: Greene’s second-half kick return and Jorge Garcia’s extra point put Muscle Shoals up 35-14. James Clemens then muffed the ensuing kickoff and the Trojans took possession on the Jets 34. Woods caught the 3-yarder from Vance 10 plays later.
Stat sheet: Muscle Shoals – Greene had 20 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, one catch for 33 yards, plus his kick return. Woods completed 8-of-9 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, had eight carries for 35 yards and a touchdown and caught a TD pass. Vance had two catches for 34 yards and two touchdowns and passed for a touchdown. James Clemens – Marsh had a touchdown run and completed 11-of-20 passes for two touchdowns with two interceptions.
By the numbers: 294 – Muscle Shoals total yards with 168 on the ground and 126 passing … 221 – James Clemens total yards on 98 rushing and 123 passing … 3 – James Clemens turnovers on two interceptions and one fumble … 2 – Muscles Shoals wins in two games against James Clemens. The Trojans won 38-10 in last year’s first meeting.
Game ball: Woods is deserving with his steady productive performance after the Jets took an early 7-0 lead.
