Cold Springs’ runner celebrates AHSAA state cross country record
Cold Springs’ Ethan Edgeworth raced his way into the record books when he finished first in the Class 1A-2A boys’ division race during Saturday’s Alabama High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held at Oakville Indian Mounds Park.
Edgeworth won in a time of 14 minutes, 34.29 seconds, more than a minute ahead of his closest competitor, teammate Jayden Allred, who ran 16:00.31. Afterward, Edgeworth said he was on a mission.
“Coming in, everybody knew all eyes were on 14:36 (the previous course record), and that was my goal,” he said. “I planned on going through the first mile in 4:30, and I did that, and I wanted to go through the two-mile in 9:15, and I did that. But I wasn’t satisfied with anything over 14:36. I was feeling good after the two-mile (mark) and I never felt good after the two-mile mark.”
Edgeworth had another reason to feel good — Cold Springs won the Class 1A-2A boys’ division, defeating archrival Hatton 68-72. Sand Rock was third with 100 points, while St. Luke’s (129) and Tharptown (185) rounded out the top five.

Mountain Brook’s girls won their third straight title, defeating Briarwood Christian 46-86. Homewood (111), Athens (192) and UMS-Wright (196) rounded out the top five. Mountain Brook head coach Michael McGovern was thrilled.
“I’m really excited for the kids,” he said. “They really bought into the team concept this year, and they didn’t care what order they finished in; they ran for each other the whole way. It’s the culmination of a great season.”
Another school sweeping titles was Providence Christian Academy in Class 4A. The boys scored 35 points, defeating Westminster Christian Academy 35-92.
